Parrot Mki9200 Firmware Update – How to do it …

Parrot Mki9200 Firmware Update – How to do it …

First a warning. If you have version 3 firmware in the MKi9200 DO NOT update it

You can check the version number by going into Settings / Advanced Settings / Information on the MKi9200. The updates are only valid for version 1 and version 2 firmware.

All updates on the MKi9200 are done with a USB memory stick, which needs to be formatted to FAT32 and is preferably blank.

If for some reason you do not have the accessory cables (USB, iPod 30 pin and Aux cable) then you cannot update the firmware.

Benefits of the Update

The really early versions of MKi9200 firmware were quite buggy and the boot up time was very long. Also, updates were made as new phones were launched.

The newer versions have compatibility / bug fixes and have a much shorter boot sequence ( turn on time).

Update preparation

Insert the memory stick into your PC and format it to FAT32 – this will remove all files so make sure you have nothing on the memory stick that you want to keep or at least copy it first.

Add a folder to the root directory of the memory stick:  ParrotUp

This folder MUST be named exactly as written above with upper case “P ” and “U”

Copy the Parrot Mki9200 update file into the ParrotUp folder and rename to “MKi9200.plf”

On the MKi9200 go into Settings / Advanced / Restore Factory Settings and confirm the reset with the Green key on the remote. The MKi9200 will erase memory and re-boot. After re-boot set the required language by pressing the centre button on the Parrot remote. The unit will then re-start once more.

Update Procedure

Before doing this are you really sure that you want to apply the update ?

If you have a version 3 control box you MUST NOT update the MKi9200.

Some early versions of the MKi9200 will require an interim update to V1.96 to be performed first, so you will need this file and also V2.11 or V2.20. If your software version is V1.95 or less you MUST update to V1.96 first. From version 2.00 software the MKi series support “multipoint” – this allows the connection of 2 phones at the same time and is enabled in the Bluetooth settings.
Do not bother with version 2.00 firmware as it had bad echo problems on handsfree – these should be updated to V2.11 or V2.20.

Important: During the update process it is possible to render the Mki9200 non-functional. You must be careful how the update is performed. If the process is incorrectly interrupted the control box can end up in a mode where it will not turn on and will need to be replaced. The information on this page is provided “as is” and is provided as a guide only. Some early Mki9200’s have been known to be rendered inoperative even when following the correct procedure.

Method

Start the vehicle to ensure that the Parrot cannot be turned off during the update process.

Simply take the USB stick where you have put the update file ( MKi9200. plf ) and insert it into the Parrot USB port. It may take a minute or so to be recognised.

On the MKi9200 go into Settings / Advanced / Firmware Update and press centre button to confirm. Within a minute you should see “update in progress” on the MKi9200 screen. After a minute or two the screen will go blank and this is when the unit is being re-programmed. DO NOT INTERRUPT THE PROCESS – you will destroy the control box by not letting the update finish correctly. After another couple of minutes the MKi9200 will re-boot and turn back on  – this shows the update has been done correctly. Set the required language and pair your phone.

Issues and Failures

After you enter the update process it is vital that it is not interrupted – you MUST wait for the unit to re-boot itself after the screen goes blank. If the unit does not re-boot after a minimum of 5 minutes, something has gone wrong. Unfortunately, your choices at this stage are rather limited.

Would recommend that you leave it to try to complete the update for a further 10 mins. After this period you can only try the following:

Recover the MKi9200 by removing the screen for 30 seconds and then plugging it back on. If the MKi9200 does not re-start it will probably be dead and will need the control box replaced.

The other alternative is to disconnect power from the control box for about 30 seconds and see if it will turn on. If this fails the control box will need to be replaced.

    Hello,
On saturday i bought my first car. The car have a parrotki9200 with version 3.12
The problem that im facing is that he lost connection on diffrent times. He saids that the bluetooth connection fails. Then the screen turning black. every time this happend , it takes different time to turning on again. I read about it on internet it maybe has something to do with Iphone, but a android phone has the same problem. It’s very annouying.
factory settings/ rebout in the menu doesn’t help at all.
Can anyone tell my what the newest software version is? I think i have the lastest one yet.
So what can i do? Where can i download the 3.12 version , so i can try to update with it. Maybe it will helps.

    Thanks a lot

As you have the version 3 control box there are no further updates.
      Try factory reset in Settings
Also try disabling the phonebook sync from phone as a test to see if connection is then stable – if so, troubleshoot phonebook for accented characters. If you are using English language accented characters are not permitted in phone book as these are no part of the ANSII character set.

    good morning,
I have a Parrot MKI9200 but no usb key is recognized by the Parrot. Do you have any idea how I can finally update it?
I’ve already tried to format it with different formats and I’ve already tried to add music, but it doesn’t work.
(the key is well recognized on my laptop)

      Hello Erwan,
The update requires a USB connection – no other way is possible on the MKi series.
Recommend trying a 32GB memory stick up to possibly 64GB. Must be formatted to FAT32.
If this is no recognised you either have a faulty control box, USB cable or possibly the pins have been pushed back on the MKi control box – misaligned cable when inserted.
      Regards,
      Philip

Hello when I try to update the mki9200 from 2.10 to 2.20 it keeps saying looking for update or something I did put the update file in the correctly named folder and also renamed the update file to the mentioned name Also when i connect a usb it doesnt seem to get recognized and i cant play the music on it?
I also did try to factory reset it and it deletes the settings and stuff but it doesnt go completely black and start up again and let mechange the language maybe that has something to do with it???

Max supported USB stick size is from memory 64GB, possibly 128GB.
Normally used a 32GB for any updates.
Try putting a couple of MP3 files on the USB stick and see if the MKi9200 will recognise and play them. If it does then must be an issue with folder location / name or filename in the ParrotUp folder

hi i bought a bluetooth parrot mki 9200. now as soon as i mount it in the car i will check which firmware is installed.
but now I would like to understand:
    1) why to install the latest firmware 2.20 is it necessary to put version 1.96 first if it has an older version?
    2) can’t you install version 2.20 regardless of which version you have in the parrot?
    3) I didn’t understand how to download version 1.96
    4) once version 1.96 is installed, I can put 2.20 directly, right?
    5) if I have firmware 1.96 or higher in my parrot, I install 2.20 directly, right?
    sorry for my english

      Hello Dozza,
Would think you have old devices still paired with the MKi9200 and it is still searching for them, which is why connection takes so long.
      Delete phones not required:
Settings / Bluetooth / Paired Devices / Phone X – Delete, then press Green button to confirm deletion.
After clearing unused phones, setup the one that you want to give priority: Settings / Bluetooth / Phone X / Set Preferred – it will then look for this phone first.

Dear Justcarkits staff, we have the parrot mki 9200 carkit in 2 different cars. The mobile phones we use are Android, (OnePlus, Oxygen 11) and iOS (iPhone 11). The firmware we run on both carkits is v2.20. Since a few months we have an issue with the connection. Once a phonecall is started, the connection with the carkit drops and after 20 seconds it rebuilds and after some time the connection breaks again. Playing music over Bluetooth is perfect, but making phone calls is very annoying. Do you have a suggestion what we could do to improve the Bluetooth connection when making phone calls?

    13/02/2022 at 12:38
    • JustCarKits Reply

      Hello Lucas,
Would suspect this is a phonebook character issue.
Quickest way to check phonebook problem is to disable phonebook transfer temporarily on the phones and see if this cures the disconnection problem.
If it does, check the phonebook for characters with accents or non-ascii characters. These will cause sync issues (and disconnection).

Almost certainly it will be the battery in the remote control needing to be replaced. The remote becomes unresponsive and “hit and miss” when the battery is going flat.
Take care of the remote as these are no longer available as a spare part.

      Hello Jilly,
The newer iPhones seem to have issues with Bluetooth connections. Think they have a lack of compatibility with Bluetooth core 1.2.
Recommend deleting all the old paired devices from the MKi9200: Settings / Bluetooth / Phone X / Delete / Green button to confirm.

After that, before pairing the iPhone again go into Settngs / Bluetooth / Pair with Phone and select AT Sync mode. then pair again and see if any better.
If this still does not help would recommend reporting the bug to Apple
