BMW Telematics Module Battery Replacement
This post describes how to replace the telematics backup battery on a BMW. The photos are from a 2018 X2 and will be similar on many different models.
The telematics module is located behind the roof lining at the rear of the vehicle. It is connected directly to the shark fin antenna.
To gain access to the telematics module it is necessary to “drop” the roof lining.
The exact process will vary by BMW model. Before removing power from any module remember to disconnect the negative terminal on the car battery.
On the X2 you will need to undo or remove the following: interior light cluster, grab handles (front and rear), sun visors and retaining clips, A-Pillar trim, B-Pillar trim, C- Pillar trim, boot lining ( both sides), boot bash panel, both bottom rear kick panels, and arm rest trims.
After you have managed to undo the roof lining the telematics box can be accessed. It is secured by a central clip that will disengage when the lever is lifted. The battery can then be accessed behind a small white cover which needs to be levered open. Once open simply remove the old battery and replace with the new one. Re-assembly is the same process as in reverse.
Once the vehicle has been re-assembled you will need to clear the stored fault codes to reset the telematics module.
JustCarKits can perform the replacement for you and will need the vehicle for 4 to 5 hours depending on the model.
