On the 1st December 2003, the law regarding the use of mobile telephone equipment in vehicles was amended.
Since the introduction of the hand held celluar phone in 1985 to the UK, it has always been illegal to use the phone on the move under the “due care and attention” section of the Road Traffic
Act.
From the 1st December 2003 a specific offence of “using a mobile whilst driving (including when temporarily stationary in traffic)” was created. This appllies to users who hold a phone whilst
driving. There will be an on the spot fine of £30, rising to £1000(£2,500 for HGV/Coaches) if the fine is contested in court. Existing legislation under “due care and attention” also still applies, where
it is felt that the fine in insufficient for the offence committed.
As from 27th February 2007 it will become an endorsable offence to use a hand held mobile phone whilst driving and will automatically attract a penalty of 3 points and a £
60 fine.
